Search something on Google today and you may not get ten blue links at all. You get a paragraph, written by Google, answering the question directly, with a short row of small citations underneath pointing to where it pulled the answer from. That paragraph is an AI Overview. AI Mode is the same idea taken further, a full conversational search experience where you can ask follow-up questions and Google keeps generating answers instead of handing you a results page at all.

Both are Google deciding, on your behalf, which few sources deserve to be read and summarised, and which everyone else simply gets left out of. Being one of the sources it cites means your name reaches the buyer directly. Not being cited means the answer gets built and delivered without you in it, even if your business is the right one for the job.

Why it matters to you

This changes what “ranking well” even means. A business can hold a solid position in classic organic results and still be completely absent from the answer Google’s AI actually gives, because the AI is judging trust and clarity differently than a plain ranking algorithm does. Checking your normal search rank no longer tells you whether you are showing up where a growing share of buyers now actually look.

It also raises the stakes on accuracy. Because the answer looks authoritative, delivered in Google’s own voice, whatever it says tends to be believed without question. If it cites an outdated bureau page instead of you, or leaves you out of a list of options entirely, a buyer walks away with a wrong impression and has no reason to suspect it.

How I set it up

I run the actual test rather than guess: asking the real buyer-style questions a prospective customer would type, across Google’s AI Mode and the major AI tools, and reading exactly which sources get cited and what gets said. That tells me concretely whether the business is present, absent, or misrepresented, before I touch anything.

From there the fix is the same underlying work as AEO and GEO, clear structured pages, named real expertise, facts that are consistent and verifiable everywhere, because that is exactly what these systems are looking for before they will cite a source by name.

What it looks like in practice

Before this work, asking Google’s AI Mode who does a certain kind of work in a certain area can return a bureau page, an old press mention, or no relevant name at all, with the actual right business nowhere in the answer. After the work, the goal is straightforward: when someone asks the question that should lead to you, the answer names you.

Questions I get about this

Is AI Overviews the same thing as AI Mode?
They are close cousins. AI Overviews is the AI-written summary block that appears above normal results for many regular searches. AI Mode is a fuller, more conversational search experience Google offers as an alternative to the classic results page. Both work the same way underneath, generating an answer from sources Google decides to trust and cite.
Can I pay to appear in an AI Overview?
No. Like a featured snippet, there is no ad placement inside the generated answer itself. Google chooses sources based on the same trust and relevance signals it uses everywhere else. The only way in is being a source Google is confident enough in to cite.
What happens if AI Mode never mentions my business at all?
You become invisible at exactly the moment someone is deciding who to hire or book, because they never see a ranked list to scroll through, only the answer Google generated. Worse, if the answer names a competitor or an outdated bureau listing instead of you, that becomes the buyer's whole impression, and you never find out unless you go check yourself.
