geo-grid rank tracking
Geo-grid rank tracking checks where a local business ranks from many different points scattered across its service area, instead of from just one address, because local rank shifts block by block.
Search for a local service and Google usually shows a map with three businesses pinned near the top, before any of the regular results. Which three businesses appear, and in what order, changes depending on exactly where the search was made from. A business ranking first for someone five minutes away can rank fifth, or not appear at all, for someone on the other side of the same city. Geo-grid rank tracking measures that whole picture at once, checking a business’s ranking from a grid of separate points spread across its actual service area, rather than from one single spot.
The name describes the method plainly. Lay a grid of points over the map of where real customers actually are, run the same search from each point, and record where the business lands at every single one. The result is not one ranking number. It is a map, showing exactly where a business dominates the local results and exactly where it disappears.
Why it matters to you
Checking your own ranking from your own office, or your own phone, tells you almost nothing useful and can actively mislead you. Google frequently shows a business owner a strong result for their own business near their own location, sometimes influenced by their own search and account history, which can feel reassuring while a customer three suburbs over sees a completely different, much worse result.
For any service area business with customers spread across a whole city or region rather than clustered around one storefront, this gap between what the owner sees and what the actual market sees is exactly where bookings quietly leak out. A grid check turns that invisible gap into a specific, visible map of where the real work needs to happen.
How I set it up
I run a grid of check points across the real neighbourhoods a business actually serves, not an arbitrary shape drawn on the map, and pull local ranking results from each point on the grid for the terms that matter most. That produces a genuine picture of coverage rather than a single, possibly flattering, number.
Paired with competitor monitoring, the same grid also shows which competitors are winning specific pockets of the service area, which is often more useful than an overall ranking comparison, because it points directly at where the actual opportunity or the actual threat sits geographically.
What it looks like in practice
A grid check for a moving or removal business serving a whole metro area might show strong rankings near the business’s own base and much weaker ones in a growing suburb on the far side of town, exactly the kind of gap a single check from head office would never reveal, and exactly the kind of gap worth closing before a competitor claims it first.
Questions I get about this
- Why would my ranking be different in different parts of town?
- Google's local results are built around distance and relevance together, not relevance alone. A business two kilometres from a searcher often ranks differently than it does for a searcher six kilometres away, even for the exact same search term. One single check from one single address only ever shows you one slice of that picture.
- Isn't checking my own ranking from my own computer good enough?
- No, and this is one of the more common mistakes a business owner makes. Google usually shows you a strong result for your own business when you search from near it, or when you are logged into an account tied to it, which can look reassuring and mean almost nothing about what an actual stranger sees from across town.
- How many points actually need checking?
- Enough to cover the real shape of the service area, not an arbitrary large number. A handful of points spread across the neighbourhoods and suburbs where real customers actually live and search gives a far more honest picture than either one central check or an unnecessarily dense grid that mostly repeats the same result.
