knowledge panel
A knowledge panel is the box of facts Google displays to the side of search results when it recognises the thing you searched for as a specific, known entity rather than just a phrase.
Search for a well-known author and a box appears on the right side of the results, photo, birth date, list of books, links to their social accounts, all pulled together in one place. That is a knowledge panel. Google is not describing a web page there. It is describing a thing it has identified, a specific person, business or organisation it considers distinct and known enough to summarise on its own.
This only happens once Google has resolved who or what you are as an entity, separate from the words on any one page. A page can rank well without ever earning a panel. A panel requires Google to be confident there is one real, singular thing behind the name, and that it has enough verified facts about that thing to display.
Why it matters to you
A knowledge panel is trust made visible before anyone even clicks a result. It tells a visitor Google itself has stood behind the facts in that box, which carries weight a plain listing does not. For a service provider, an author, a speaker or a local business with any public profile, it is often the difference between looking like one name among many and looking like the recognised authority on the search page.
It also protects you. Without a panel, or with a poorly built one, Google sometimes fills gaps with guesses, or a directory site’s outdated listing becomes the loudest voice about who you are. A well-formed panel, kept current, is one of the few places you get to correct the record directly.
What I do about it
I cannot make Google create a panel by asking. What I can do is remove Google’s reasons for doubt. That means the same name, credentials and facts appearing consistently across your site, your Google Business Profile, and any other public listings, so nothing contradicts anything else. I add structured data that states clearly who or what the business is, and I make sure the facts a panel would need, hours, services, location, credentials, actually live somewhere Google can verify them.
For people with any public profile, a bureau page, a press mention or an old directory listing that has drifted out of date can end up feeding the wrong information into a panel, or blocking one from forming cleanly at all. Part of the work is finding those loose threads and either fixing them or making the correct source louder.
What it looks like in practice
Search a client’s business name once this work is done and, where Google decides the confidence bar is met, a panel appears with the right hours, the right services, and links that go to pages that are actually live and correct. Where it does not yet appear, the groundwork is still doing its job everywhere else results are shown, in the map pack, in rich results, and in how AI tools describe you when someone asks.
Questions I get about this
- How do I get a knowledge panel for my business?
- You cannot request one directly for most small businesses. Google generates it when it has confidently identified you as a distinct, verifiable thing, usually helped along by a Google Business Profile, consistent facts across the web, and sometimes a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry for well-known people or brands. You earn the confidence, not the panel itself.
- Is a knowledge panel the same as a Google Business Profile listing?
- They overlap but are not identical. A Google Business Profile powers the local map-pack listing and often feeds facts into a knowledge panel, but a knowledge panel can also appear for people, brands, books or organisations that have no physical storefront at all, based purely on how well known and clearly defined they are online.
- Why does a competitor have a knowledge panel and I don't?
- Usually it comes down to how confidently Google can identify them as a single, consistent thing. If their name, facts and credentials line up the same way across their site, their Google Business Profile and other sources, Google has less doubt to resolve. Inconsistent or thin information across the web is the most common reason a panel never appears.
